A HIGH-PROFILE ILLAWARRA PROJECT ON A BUSY UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Thompson Bros was engaged by FDC Constructions to protect the Bruce Gordon Centre project in North Wollongong.

FDC has trusted Thompson Bros with CCTV, timelapse and site security systems for more than 15 years, across multiple previous and current sites in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

The site sat within the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, so local traffic conditions meant the site entrances needed constant CCTV monitoring. The site shed compound and storage containers also needed protection after hours.

SITE RISK PROFILE

Why Construction Site Security Was Critical in North Wollongong

Large sporting facility projects hold tools, machinery, building materials and temporary site infrastructure across a wide area.

At the Bruce Gordon Centre, the works were spread across a large footprint on an active university campus, with separate work areas and constant traffic around the site.

The site needed constant visibility of its entrances as well as verified after-hours protection for the compound.

Site Entrances

Local traffic conditions meant the site entrances needed constant CCTV monitoring.

University Traffic

Students, staff and vehicles moved through and around the construction site every day.

After-Hours Intrusions

The system needed to detect and verify intruders quickly so incidents could be escalated to police.

Site Shed Compound

The site sheds held equipment and documents that needed to remain secure outside working hours.

Storage Containers and Water Tank

Storage containers and the site water tank needed dedicated after-hours protection.

Large Site Footprint

Two fields and separate work areas created a large site that required carefully planned coverage.

SITE CHALLENGE

A Large, Segregated Site Without Local Power

The Bruce Gordon Centre was not a simple single-building installation.

The site had a large footprint and segregated work areas, including the second oval works around 100 metres from the main site.

Many camera positions had no local power supply, so all three timelapse cameras ran on solar power.

Getting CCTV coverage across the site required a mix of wireless links, long cable runs with signal boosters and trenched cable runs.

No Power at Timelapse Locations

All three timelapse systems required solar power because there was no local power supply at their positions.

Segregated Work Areas

The second oval works sat around 100 metres from the main site, requiring separate coverage.

Wireless CCTV Links

Numerous wireless links were installed to connect CCTV cameras across the large site.

Long Cable Runs

Long cable runs used signal boosters to carry CCTV footage reliably over the distance.

Trenched Cabling

Where needed, cables were trenched to connect cameras without exposed runs across the site.

The system needed to cover a large, spread-out site and manage traffic risks as well as after-hours security.

THE SOLUTION

CCTV, Monitored Video Alarms and Solar Timelapse

Thompson Bros designed and installed an integrated system covering site security, traffic visibility and long-term project documentation.

The complete installation included:

  • A six-camera CCTV system covering high-risk traffic areas and the site sheds
  • Three monitored MotionViewer cameras covering the site shed, storage container and water tank
  • Three solar-powered construction timelapse cameras
  • Wireless links, long cable runs with signal boosters and trenched cable runs

Six-Camera CCTV System

A six-camera CCTV system covered the site entrances, high-risk traffic areas and the site sheds. CCTV views of the surrounding streets and intersections helped the team manage university traffic moving through and around the construction site.

Three Monitored MotionViewer Cameras

Three MotionViewer cameras protected the site shed, a storage container and the water tank after hours. Unlike a sensor-only alarm, the monitored video system allowed alarm events to be verified before police were called.

Three Solar-Powered Timelapse Cameras

Three timelapse cameras documented the construction of the centre and its fields. With no local power at the selected positions, all three systems ran on solar power, giving continuous project-progress footage without relying on site electrical infrastructure.

Wireless Links and Long Cable Runs

Numerous wireless links, long cable runs with signal boosters and trenched cable runs connected the CCTV cameras across the site. This brought the segregated work areas, including the second oval, into one system.

Traffic Hazard Management

Temporary CCTV cameras gave views of the streets and intersections outside the site. This helped manage traffic hazards on a busy university campus where students, staff and vehicles moved close to the works.

Verified Security Response

Monitored cameras allowed confirmed after-hours intrusions to be escalated quickly.

Solar Operation

All three timelapse systems operated where no local power supply was available.

Wireless Transmission

Wireless links, boosted cable runs and trenched cabling connected CCTV across the site.

Traffic Visibility

CCTV covered surrounding streets and intersections to help manage university traffic.

THE RESULT

Four Confirmed Intrusions With No Reported Theft or Damage

Between November 2025 and March 2026, police were called to the site on four occasions following confirmed unauthorised intrusions detected by the monitored security system.

No arrests were made, but thanks to the fast response from Wollongong police, no theft or damage was reported.

4

Confirmed after-hours intrusions

The rapid escalation and police response stopped the incidents from developing into theft, vandalism or damage to the construction works.

The visible police response also acted as a deterrent against further attempts to enter the site.

Officially Opened in May 2026

The Bruce Gordon Centre was officially opened on 22 May 2026.

For a major builder, the value of an effective construction site security system is not measured only by arrests.

A successful result is an intruder leaving before anything is stolen, completed work avoiding damage and the construction program continuing without an insurance claim, replacement cost or avoidable delay.

Intrusions Verified

Video evidence enabled monitored events to be confirmed before escalation.

Police Dispatched

Police attended the site in response to four confirmed intrusions.

Losses Prevented

The response prevented offenders from causing theft or damage during the incidents.

Traffic Managed With CCTV

CCTV views of the streets and intersections around the site helped manage university traffic moving through and around the works.

PROJECT VISIBILITY AND TRAFFIC

More Than After-Hours Construction Site Security

The installed systems gave FDC Constructions benefits extending beyond theft prevention.

CCTV coverage of the site entrances and surrounding streets helped manage traffic on a busy university campus, while the three timelapse cameras created a high-quality visual record of the centre taking shape.

Entrance Monitoring

CCTV gave constant visibility of the site entrances on a busy university campus.

Traffic Hazard Management

Views of nearby streets and intersections helped manage traffic around the works.

Compound Protection

Monitored cameras protected the site shed, storage container and water tank after hours.

Progress Documentation

Three timelapse cameras documented the construction of a major Illawarra sporting facility.

Marketing for Builder and Club

The timelapse videos could be used for marketing by both FDC Constructions and the St George Illawarra Dragons.

A NEW HOME FOR THE DRAGONS

Timelapse Footage for the Builder and the Club

The Bruce Gordon Centre is the $65 million St George Illawarra Dragons Community and High Performance Centre, officially opened on 22 May 2026.

The footage from the three timelapse cameras gave both FDC Constructions and the Dragons a visual record of the development that could be used to show construction progress and showcase the finished centre.

Combining security cameras with professional construction timelapse meant the same project benefited from active risk management during the build and valuable visual content after completion.

A PROVEN SECURITY PARTNER
