A HIGH-PROFILE WESTERN SYDNEY PROJECT REQUIRING INTEGRATED SITE SECURITY
Thompson Bros was engaged by Kane Constructions to protect the Parramatta Eels Centre of Excellence project in Kellyville.
The project included upgrades to the existing sporting ovals and the construction of a new training and community facility incorporating high-value internal finishes, specialist sporting infrastructure and extensive building services.
With tools, machinery, temporary site offices and construction materials onsite, Kane required more than a standard standalone CCTV system. Copper theft was a particular concern as electrical and hydraulic services were installed throughout the new facility.
Thompson Bros had already successfully delivered security systems across numerous Kane Constructions projects. The existing relationship, combined with Thompson Bros’ ability to supply several complementary services through one provider, made the company well suited to the project.
SITE RISK PROFILE
Why Construction Site Security Was Critical in Kellyville
Large construction projects can contain hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of tools, machinery, electrical cabling, copper, building materials and temporary site infrastructure.
At the Parramatta Eels Centre of Excellence, these assets were distributed across a broad construction footprint that included the new facility and surrounding sporting ovals.
The site needed active detection and verified response rather than relying solely on temporary fencing and passive recording.
Tools and Machinery
Tools, machinery and contractor equipment required protection from opportunistic after-hours theft.
New Construction
Unauthorised access created a risk of damage to completed work, internal finishes and newly installed services.
After-Hours Intrusions
The system needed to detect and verify intruders quickly so incidents could be escalated before theft or damage occurred.
Temporary Site Offices
Site offices contained equipment, documents and other assets that needed to remain secure outside working hours.
Copper and Construction Materials
Copper cabling, pipework and other valuable construction materials presented an attractive target during the building-services stages.
Large Site Footprint
The size of the facility and adjoining ovals required several different technologies to provide effective coverage.
SITE CHALLENGE
A Large Site Footprint With Areas Without Permanent Power
The Parramatta Eels Centre of Excellence was not a simple single-building installation.
The site covered the new training facility, grandstand and surrounding oval areas. Camera positions needed to capture both the progression of the building and the broader sporting-field works.
Permanent power was not available in the areas selected for the two timelapse cameras. Thompson Bros therefore needed to design standalone solar systems that could continue documenting the project without depending on temporary site power.
The CCTV system also required wireless transmission links so footage could be delivered reliably across the site and made available to Kane Constructions for remote viewing.
No Power at Timelapse Locations
Both timelapse systems required solar power because conventional power was unavailable at the selected camera positions.
Broad Construction Footprint
The combination of buildings, grandstand and sporting ovals created a large area requiring carefully planned camera placement.
Wireless CCTV Links
Wireless transmission links were installed to connect the CCTV cameras across the site without extensive fixed cabling.
Remote Client Access
Kane Constructions was given remote access to the CCTV system, improving visibility without requiring project staff to be physically present in every area.
Complex Installation Positions
One timelapse camera required a six-metre pole to be installed within the main grandstand using custom-manufactured mounting brackets.
The system needed to support both security response and practical project visibility, without relying on permanent power or a conventional site office location.
THE SOLUTION
Monitored Video Alarms, CCTV, Solar Timelapse and Nurse Call Systems
Thompson Bros designed and installed an integrated system that addressed site security, project visibility, worker communication, WHS requirements and long-term project documentation.
The complete installation included:
- Nine monitored MotionViewer security cameras
- One four-camera CCTV system
- Two solar-powered construction timelapse cameras
- One 10-station nurse call system
- Six handheld radios
- Wireless CCTV transmission links
- Remote CCTV access for Kane Constructions
Nine Monitored MotionViewer Cameras
Nine MotionViewer cameras were positioned around vulnerable areas of the construction site to detect and visually verify unauthorised after-hours access. Unlike a conventional sensor-only alarm, the monitored video system allowed alarm events to be assessed before being escalated for police response.
- Verified intrusion detection
- Professionally monitored security
- After-hours site protection
- Faster response escalation
Four-Camera CCTV System
A four-camera CCTV system provided broader visibility across important sections of the project. Wireless transmission links were installed to connect the cameras, while remote viewing access allowed authorised Kane Constructions personnel to check the site without needing to attend in person.
- Live and recorded footage
- Wireless transmission
- Remote client viewing
- Improved site oversight
Two Solar-Powered Timelapse Cameras
Two timelapse cameras documented the construction and oval upgrade works. Because permanent power was unavailable at the selected positions, both systems were configured for solar operation. This gave Kane Constructions continuous project-progress footage without relying on site electrical infrastructure. The second timelapse installation used a six-metre pole positioned in the main grandstand. Thompson Bros manufactured custom brackets to securely integrate the pole into the structure and achieve the required view across the project.
- Solar-powered operation
- High-quality project footage
- Custom mounting solution
- Building and oval coverage
10-Station Nurse Call System
A 10-station nurse call system supported communication and WHS procedures across the large site. The system gave workers a practical way to raise an alert from different areas of the project and helped the builder strengthen its site emergency-response arrangements.
- Improved WHS communication
- Ten call locations
- Coverage across a large site
- Faster emergency notification
Six Handheld Radios
Six handheld radios were also supplied to support reliable communication between project personnel. This was particularly useful across the large site footprint, where staff and contractors could be working in separate sections of the facility and surrounding sporting areas.
- Clear onsite communication
- Improved coordination
- Suitable for large sites
- Supports incident response
Verified Security Response
Monitored cameras allowed confirmed after-hours intrusions to be escalated quickly.
Solar Operation
Both timelapse systems operated in areas where permanent site power was unavailable.
Wireless Transmission
Wireless links connected the CCTV system across the large construction footprint.
Remote Visibility
Kane Constructions could remotely view CCTV footage and maintain better oversight of the project.

THE RESULT
Four Confirmed Intrusions With No Reported Theft or Damage
The Thompson Bros equipment remained onsite for approximately 18 months.
During that period, police were called on four occasions following confirmed unauthorised intrusions detected by the monitored security system.
4
Confirmed after-hours intrusions
Although no arrests were made, the rapid escalation and police response prevented the incidents from developing into theft, vandalism or damage to the construction works.
The visible police response also acted as a deterrent against further attempts to enter the site.
On Time and On Budget
The project was able to continue towards its scheduled completion without security-related losses or delays.
For a major builder, the value of an effective construction site security system is not measured only by arrests.
A successful result can be an intruder leaving before anything is stolen, copper remaining onsite, completed work avoiding damage and the construction program continuing without an insurance claim, replacement cost or avoidable delay.
Intrusions Verified
Video evidence enabled monitored events to be confirmed before escalation.
Police Dispatched
Police attended the site in response to four confirmed intrusions.
Losses Prevented
The response prevented offenders from causing theft or damage during the incidents.
Further Attempts Deterred
The rapid response and visible police presence helped discourage repeated attempts to target the project.
PROJECT VISIBILITY AND WHS
More Than After-Hours Construction Site Security
The installed systems provided Kane Constructions with benefits extending beyond theft prevention.
Remote CCTV access improved day-to-day visibility across the broad project footprint, while the nurse call system and handheld radios supported onsite communication and WHS procedures.
The two timelapse cameras also created a high-quality visual record of the facility taking shape.
Remote Site Visibility
Authorised Kane Constructions personnel could remotely access the CCTV system and check key sections of the site.
WHS Monitoring
The 10-station nurse call system supported site safety and emergency communication across the project.
Team Communication
Handheld radios improved communication between personnel working in different areas of the site.
Progress Documentation
The timelapse cameras documented the construction of a major Western Sydney sporting facility from carefully selected positions.
Builder Marketing
Kane Constructions received high-quality timelapse footage that could be used for project showcases, stakeholder communications, marketing and media coverage.
A HIGH-PROFILE WESTERN SYDNEY DEVELOPMENT
Project Footage Supporting Marketing and Media Coverage
The Parramatta Eels Centre of Excellence was a prominent sporting and community infrastructure project.
The timelapse footage supplied by Thompson Bros gave Kane Constructions a visual record of the development that could be used to demonstrate construction progress and showcase the completed work.
The project was subsequently featured by the Australian National Construction Review, highlighting the scale and significance of the new high-performance and community facility.
The ability to combine security cameras with professional construction timelapse allowed the same project to benefit from active risk management during the build and valuable visual content after completion.
